Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."
Greetings to all from the community of faith at Cassel Mennonite Church!Since "no one may truly know Christ except one who follows him in life" (John Denck, 16th century), Mennonites have emphasized a life of Christian discipleship. We are a community of faith seeking to follow Jesus Christ in this life and in this world. You are invited to join us in discerning God's transforming vision for a people of faith.
We are a "medium" sized congregation. Our church building sits at a country crossroads surrounded by farms. A significant number of our families still reside on farms and draw at least part of their income from agriculture. Many households have "R.R." addresses.
Cassel is a congregation that is family-oriented in a traditional way. We have Sunday School classes for all ages and many other activities as well. We have a nice balance of all ages.
Pray for…our hopes that Cassel will continue to grow spiritually and proclaim God’s Word in our community…our Sunday School as it continues to nurture young and old…our worship as we seek to include all ages and persons in praising God…our prayer life as we engage in directed and intentional prayer…our desire to faithfully serve our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Cassel Mennonite Church is a place to meet God and serve Jesus Christ! Cassel Mennonite Church offers a warm welcome to all!
MISSION STATEMENT
To be a community of people who love the Lord:
*empowered by the Holy Spirit to reach out with the good news of God's love
*to help each other and those in the community meet their needs and experience faith in Christ
OUR COVENANT OF MEMBERSHIP
We believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, by whose life, death, and resurrection our salvation is made possible.
We confess our need for God’s grace, and we accept His forgiveness. We pledge, by the help of God’s Spirit, to forsake all other loyalties and to follow only Jesus Christ as our Lord.
We commit ourselves to the church of Jesus Christ in this congregation as the setting in which we will serve God and seek opportunities for mutual encouragement in the Christian life.
A BRIEF HISTORY
On Sunday, May 5, 1935, 162 people met to worship for the first time as Cassel
For many years, the Cassel and East Zorra congregations functioned as one congregation with a joint pastoral team of Bishop Daniel Iutzi, ministers Jacob R. Bender and Menno Kipfer, and deacons Dan Wagler and David Swartzentruber. The preaching switched from German to English in 1930.
In 1964, Cassel voted to become a separate congregation. Vernon Zehr was pastor.
Our Amish Mennonite Conference of Ontario changed its name to the Western Ontario Mennonite Conference in 1963. In 1988, this conference merged with two other conferences to become the Mennonite Conference of Eastern Canada.
In 1994-5, the congregation carried out a major addition and other significant renovations to the church building. The addition and renovations were paid off late in 2000.
The years have brought many changes. We remain a rural church committed to ministry in our rural setting. May our Lord strengthen and empower us to work for the unfolding realm of God!
